A portmanteau <i>word<\/i>\u00a0is formed by combining the sounds and meanings of two different words. Linguists also call such a word a <i>blend<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>Most portmanteaus merge the initial part of one word with the end of another: <i>smog<\/i>\u00a0(<i>smoke<\/i>\u00a0+ <i>fog<\/i>) and <i>infomercial<\/i>\u00a0(<i>information<\/i>\u00a0+ <i>commercial<\/i>). Others combine one complete word with part of another: <i>docudrama<\/i>\u00a0(<i>documentary<\/i>\u00a0+ <i>drama<\/i>) and <i>palimony<\/i>\u00a0(<i>pal<\/i>\u00a0+ <i>alimony<\/i>).
