Because of that, students can participate in Kwantlen courses &#8211; indeed, courses at any British Columbia university &#8211; from anywhere in the world.\u00a0This distressing caution comes from <a href=\"https:\/\/thetyee.ca\/News\/2020\/09\/04\/UBC-Warns-International-Students-Online-Course-Dangers\/\">The Tyee<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>Some University of British Columbia students starting online studies next week will see a new kind of disclaimer on course outlines \u2014 this course could be illegal and even dangerous to access, depending on where you are. \u2026<\/p><p>\u201cSome UBC courses might cover topics that are censored or considered illegal by non-Canadian governments,\u201d [wrote] Andrew Szeri, UBC\u2019s vice-president academic. &#8220;This may include \u2026 human rights, representative government, defamation, obscenity, gender or sexuality, and historical or current geopolitical controversies.\u201d<\/p><p>While UBC is \u201cstrongly committed to academic freedom\u201d it has no sway over international governments, the warning says, and students should \u201cexercise caution\u201d when choosing courses this semester.<\/p><p>The letter also includes a warning for students. \u201cStudents should be mindful that when they partake in class discussions or communicate to the members of the class, that for some students living abroad, sensitive material might result in repercussions,\u201d it cautions. \u2026<\/p><p>\u201cI think the university is trying to help students be alerted to the possibilities and make sure that they\u2019re cautious if they\u2019re in a place where some subjects may not be OK to study,\u201d she said, \u201cand that, that might actually mean they want to think about postponing a course.\u201d<\/p><p>In the letter to faculty, the university said it is working to broaden the acceptable reasons for dropping a course without academic penalty to ensure students are not forced to choose between a course they need to graduate and their personal safety.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Good mental hygiene requires that we explore worst-case scenarios.
