Coates<\/a> is very charming.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"css-n7ezar e2kc3sl0\">Ms. Coates vowed to find a way to make a career in cinema. She would need to overcome not only her family\u2019s resistance but also the fact that the industry had few jobs open to women.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-n7ezar e2kc3sl0\">\u201cThings like hairdressing didn\u2019t really interest me,\u201d she told The Hollywood Reporter in 2016. \u201cI found the most interesting job a woman could do, other than acting, was editing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-n7ezar e2kc3sl0\">Her [film producer] uncle relented enough to find her a job with the religious-film arm of his company, which made devotional pictures for churches.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-n7ezar e2kc3sl0\">\u201cHe thought, \u2018That\u2019ll cool her down,\u2019 \u201d Ms. Coates recalled. \u201cDidn\u2019t work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-n7ezar e2kc3sl0\">After her apprenticeship there, where she ran the projector and made the tea, she caught on as cutting-room assistant at&nbsp;<a class=\"css-k0qyxd\" title=\"Website\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pinewoodgroup.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pinewood Studios<\/a>, the facility her uncle had established outside London. Early films to which she contributed included \u201cThe Red Shoes\u201d (1948), directed by Mr. Powell and Emeric Pressburger.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-n7ezar e2kc3sl0\">At Pinewood, Ms. Coates\u2019s boss was a white-haired editor who left each afternoon at 4 to tend his garden. \u201cHe would say, \u2018You finish it,\u2019 \u201d she recalled, and that was how she truly learned her craft.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-n7ezar e2kc3sl0\">By then Ms. Coates knew she had found her calling: Editing was one of the few branches of the industry relatively hospitable to women.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-n7ezar e2kc3sl0\">\u201cWomen are mostly mothers and directors are mostly children, so the two go very well together,\u201d she said in a 2005 interview.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The New York Times obituary of famed film editor Anne V.
